Sleep deprivation triggers a cascade of metabolic consequences that accelerate aging and disease risk. A 2022 study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that just two weeks of mild sleep restriction (6 hours/night vs. 9 hours/night) increased circulating cortisol, fasting insulin, and visceral fat deposition in healthy adults — changes equivalent to several months of dietary deviation.

Cortisol — the primary stress hormone — follows a diurnal rhythm and is normally lowest during nighttime sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts this rhythm, sustaining elevated cortisol throughout the day. Elevated cortisol promotes gluconeogenesis (liver glucose production), suppresses insulin sensitivity, stimulates appetite (particularly for high-sugar, high-fat foods), and directly promotes visceral fat storage via cortisol receptors on abdominal adipose tissue.
