Low-glycemic dietary patterns — characterized by high fiber, high protein, low refined carbohydrate, and high polyphenol content — consistently improve insulin sensitivity in clinical trials. A 2021 meta-analysis of 84 RCTs found that replacing refined carbohydrates with protein improved fasting insulin by 15–25% and reduced HOMA-IR (a measure of insulin resistance) by 22% over 12 weeks.
