8,000+identified polyphenol structures in plants
34%lower heart attack risk with berry consumption
47 RCTsconfirming polyphenols reduce inflammation

Polyphenols are a diverse family of plant-derived bioactive compounds with over 8,000 identified structures. They include flavonoids (quercetin, catechins, anthocyanins), phenolic acids, stilbenes (resveratrol), and lignans. A 2023 systematic review in Nutrients analyzed 47 randomized controlled trials and concluded that polyphenol-rich dietary interventions consistently reduced inflammatory biomarkers โ€” particularly CRP, IL-6, and TNF-ฮฑ โ€” across diverse populations.

Berries โ€” blueberries, raspberries, strawberries โ€” are among the richest dietary sources of anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids with particularly strong anti-inflammatory activity. A Harvard cohort study following 93,600 women found that those consuming three or more servings of strawberries and blueberries per week had a 34% lower risk of myocardial infarction over 18 years, with flavonoid intake identified as the active component.

โ€œExtra virgin olive oil contains oleocanthal โ€” a compound that inhibits the same enzymes as ibuprofen, at real dietary doses.โ€

Extra virgin olive oil's anti-inflammatory effects are attributed primarily to oleocanthal โ€” a phenolic compound that inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes by a mechanism virtually identical to ibuprofen. At typical EVOO consumption levels in Mediterranean populations (50 ml/day), the oleocanthal dose approximates a 10% adult ibuprofen dose โ€” enough for measurable anti-inflammatory effect.

Crucially, polyphenol bioavailability is highly dependent on gut microbiome composition โ€” the same bacteria associated with healthy aging convert polyphenols into their most bioactive forms. This creates a positive feedback loop: a polyphenol-rich diet nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, which in turn unlock the full anti-inflammatory potential of those polyphenols.
