A landmark prospective cohort study from Harvard's Nurses' Health Study — following over 48,000 women across three decades — found that midlife dietary protein intake was significantly associated with healthy aging outcomes, including preservation of physical function, cognitive health, and absence of chronic disease. Women with the highest protein intake in their 40s and 50s had 46% greater odds of achieving 'healthy aging' at 70.

The study found plant protein to be particularly protective for cognitive outcomes, while animal protein was more strongly associated with physical function preservation. The researchers concluded that the combination of both sources produced the most robust longevity outcomes across all domains.

“Women with the highest protein intake in their 40s and 50s had 46% greater odds of achieving 'healthy aging' at 70 — defined as freedom from chronic disease, good physical function, and preserved cognitive health.”

Beyond protein, the longevity literature consistently points to three dietary patterns as the most evidence-supported for women over 50: high dietary fiber (30+ g/day), low refined carbohydrate load, and high antioxidant intake from colorful whole foods.

The VITA approach is built on exactly this intersection: recipes that are high in protein, high in fiber, rich in antioxidants from fresh fruit and vegetables, and completely free of the refined sugar and white flour that spike blood glucose and accelerate inflammatory aging.
